Bio

Wilma Vissers (born 10 February 1962, Heerlen, NL) is a visual artist based in Glencolmcille, Ireland, and Groningen, the Netherlands. She studied printmaking and painting at ABK Minerva (1988–1989) and is completing a Master in Art Education at Minerva (2024/25). Recent projects include co-curating Color/No Color (De Vishal, Haarlem) and a Mondriaan Fund–supported residency at Drim Cottage, Ireland. Her exhibitions span Ireland, the Netherlands, France, Latvia, and Australia, with solo shows at Limerick Museum and De Vishal. Residencies include Skaftfell (Iceland), Cill Rialaig, Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Heinrich Boll Cottage Achill island Ireland and sites in the Faroe Islands. Her work is held in collections such as ARTisBOOK, NIVAL Dublin, and Sunda Municipality. Vissers also curates De Portiersloge, Groningen’s smallest gallery.

Artist statement
My work explores space, light, and color through an experimental approach, inspired by emptiness, openness, and a sense of infinite possibility. I often spend long periods along the northeastern Atlantic, especially in Ireland. Since 2025, I have lived part of the year in Glencolmcille. I work across media including painting, sculpture, drawing, artist books, and installation. Artist residencies have shaped my practice, encouraging experimentation and questioning what a painting can be. Walking the landscape around Glencolmcille, I became fascinated by traces of human presence in nature. Using rubbings from graveyard monuments, I transform old inscriptions into new compositions, connecting past and present through tactile processes.
