SUSAN FORREST CASTLE  

Biography
In addition to serving as a senior writer at Sotheby’s and the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, author and visual artist Susan Castle has written on art, architecture, and garden design for national and international publications. Her monograph, Richard Segalman: Black and White | Muses, Magic & Monotypes, was published by The Artist Book Foundation in 2015 and her novel Ensoulment, was 
winner of the 2025 Thomas E. Kennedy literary fiction award from Serving House Books. Her work as a painter, photographer and printmaker has been exhibited and collected in several U.S. cities, in Waterford, Ireland, and in Milan and Venice, Italy where she has been an artist-in-residence at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia and four times at Venezia Contemporanea. She lives in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.  

Artist Statement
When I write, when I draw, when I paint, my voice––the words I write, the marks or brush strokes I make––change in accordance with my subject. I sometimes fear this chameleon-like way of working makes it seem as if I have no distinguishable style. But my style is to pay close attention to what is in front of me, or stirring in my imagination, and then let subject move my pencil as it will. This is not a conscious act; on the contrary, I feel as if at my best I am working unconsciously.
