Artists statement

I combine different materials, likely watercolour or ink washes for the colour fields, with pen and ink (or fine marker) for the intricate details.  The most striking feature is the use of two main types of repetitive patterns to create texture, form and shadow.  Areas of the figures and animals are covered in dense, small dots or circles, sometimes varying in size and
color (e.g., white, blue, purple) to suggest texture, light, or an internal/cosmic quality.  

Other sections are filled with tight, fine, repetitive lines often slightly wavy, curved, or following the contours of the form to suggest movement, fur, feathers, or clothing texture.  The patterns are not random; they are meticulously applied to model the form and give the figures and animals a sense of three dimensionality and solidity, despite the stylised nature of the artwork. The technique is used to depict unusual and often surreal figures, such as humans merging with or containing other elements (birds, landscapes, other figures) and stylised animals (elephant, bird-like creatures.

There is a clear use of applied colour washes (pinks, purples, blues, yellows, earthy tones) underneath or interwoven with the black/white line work and dots, providing a rich, vibrant base.

The use of plain paper (white or light brown/kraft paper) often serves as a significant element, allowing the patterned forms to stand out starkly.  In summary, the technique is a blend of expressive, vibrant washes and detailed,
almost obsessive, patterned mark-making.
