Bio
Born in 1972, I am an Irish-based professional artist and curator with over two decades’ experience in arts facilitation, practice and education. I began my career in 1995 with Crescent Arts Centre and Belfast City Council and have since developed an established studio practice alongside teaching creative arts and oil painting. A professional member of Visual Artists Ireland, I have pursued sustained artistic development since 2005.

My work explores sensory relationships with landscape and sea as sites of memory, belonging and connection. Drawing on nurturing associations with place, I consider myself and my work as an extension of these environments. My paintings and drawings have evolved towards semi-representational, abstract land and seascapes. Working both en plein air and in the studio, I employ traditional and experimental processes in oil, charcoal and mixed media across paper, wood and canvas, often creating my own mark-making tools from locally gathered materials.

Artist statement
Sinéad Smyth is a contemporary Irish artist whose paintings and drawings translate lived experiences of landscape, memory and belonging. Working in oils, charcoal and mixed media, she responds to the rugged atmosphere and energy of the Inishowen Peninsula, in Donegal, where she lives and works. 

Her practice combines observation and personal history, working en plein air and from memory, capturing essence and atmosphere through gestural mark-making and expressive use of colour and space. 

Exploring the nurturing relationship between people and place, Smyth creates semi-representational and abstract landscapes that evoke emotional connection and the enduring influence of geography on identity.
