Artist statement
Philippe Briade explores the tension between power and fragility, between flow and matter. Compressed charcoal, dense and instinctive, becomes here a living, almost organic material, tracing on paper the beating of an energy in transformation. The work is part of a universe where nature, the body, and memory intermingle in a continuous movement of hybridization. The forms seem to break apart and reform, evoking fragments of a living being in mutation.
A spiral of energy that absorbs and unites, a field of forces where the organic and the chaotic merge. Close to the physicality of gesture and breath, the line becomes musical, impulsive, syncopated, sometimes almost choreographic.
Briade works by listening to movement, as if the drawing responded to a primitive pulse, a resonance between the hand and the material.

More info: This drawing took shape like a molting process. Layers of lines built up, forming a dense, living, sometimes suffocating substance. Today, I see in it a skin in the process of transformation— neither entirely shed nor completely renewed. This work speaks to those silent transitions where we change without realizing it, where we leave a part of ourselves behind to allow another to emerge. A slow, fragile, yet necessary transformation.

More info: My drawings begin with an instinctive, almost immediate gesture. Lines unfold and intertwine freely, suggesting fibers, flows, roots, muscles or strands of hair, without ever settling into a fixed form. In a second phase, the work becomes slower and more controlled. Through successive layers of lines, the drawing gains density and structure while preserving a sense of movement. This dialogue between spontaneity and precision allows the forms to remain open, organic, and in constant transformation, hovering between abstraction and the evocation of the living.

The lines accumulate, intersect, and thicken to reveal an internal, almost organic energy that is constantly transforming. Here, I am interested in that tipping point where the figure escapes its own definition. The body is no longer a fixed outline but a field of forces, traversed by flows, contractions, and expansions. It unravels as much as it constructs itself. The graphic gesture acts as a tool for exploration: it records variations, resistances, and zones of friction. Through this turbulence, I seek less to represent than to experience—to give form to a fundamental instability, to a presence in the making, constantly reconfiguring itself.
