Artist statement
Drawing for me is the application of lines, dots, or structures to a two- or three-dimensional surface.
Understood in this way, drawing bears a special quality that sets it apart from any other visual art form I know of - something I would call its "analytical" character:
any drawn artifact is inevitably a composite of smaller elements - dabs, lines, outlines, hatches, textures, or tiny planes, all leading to the construction of an overall visual impression.
Drawing, taken in this way, corresponds to my own way of thinking, which could basically be called a never-ending philosophical wonder at the overwhelming structural complexity of the world we live in.
My drawing is motivated by the urge to capture this philosophical awe visually and haptically, incorporating as much detail and as much visual and semantic complexity as humanly possible - and as the medium allows.
One could say that I am successful when my work has been able to trigger my own astonishment in the viewer of my drawings.
