Artists Statement

I'm a Scottish painter inspired by architecture and the sea. Working mainly in oils and watercolour, with drawing at the centre of my practice, I explore colour, composition, and a sense of place. Much of my work focuses on Glasgow's architecture and parks, but I'm equally drawn to the wider Scottish landscape—where crumbling buildings, harbours, and pylons meet distant islands and purple mountains.

In 2021, I received a grant from Creative Scotland to develop my work further. During lockdown, I spent a lot of time exploring my local area, looking closely at Glasgow's streets, tenements, and the River Clyde. I became fascinated by the way light moves across sandstone buildings, reflects in large Victorian windows, and transforms familiar places throughout the day. Since then, I've enjoyed working outdoors, sketching on street corners as well as in the studio.

Alongside my studio practice, I take commissions for bespoke paintings. Recent works include a couple's first flat, wedding venues, family homes, and even a much-loved grocery store—commissions that have travelled from San Francisco to Edinburgh. Each piece reflects the enduring connection people hold with place and memory, particularly their ties to Scotland.

Bio

A graduate of Glasgow School of Art's Fine Art Department, I began my career exhibiting in the "New Talent" show at the 369 Gallery in Edinburgh. Since then, I have built an extensive exhibition record, showing work widely across Scotland and in London, in both group and mixed exhibitions. Notable venues include the Royal Scottish Academy, Paisley Art Institute, The Lillie Art Gallery, and Glasgow Art Club. I am a proud member of Drawing Box International, Glasgow Society of Women Artists, and Visual Arts Scotland.

I regularly take part in open studios, and my drawings were recently commissioned to illustrate the Ringlander series of fantasy books. My practice has been supported by a number of awards and funding bodies, including the Creative Scotland Open Project Fund (2021), alongside earlier grants from Glasgow City Council and other arts organisations.

Alongside my own painting practice, I have worked for many years in arts education and community projects across Scotland, leading creative projects with schools, health organisations, community groups, and fellow artists. These experiences continue to shape both the way I work and why I make art—connection, observation, and shared experience remain central to my practice.
