Artist Statement

I am an Irish artist living and working in rural Co. Galway and a graduate of ATU with a degree in Art and Design from the Centre for Arts and Creative Media. 

My drawing practice centres on engaging with the landscape and climate in which I live in order to challenge my ambivalence towards this rain-soaked, rocky environment.  I find a constant source of inspiration in the marshy lowlands, limestone fields, and vanishing lakes known as turloughs in front of my studio.

In my work, themes of rain, flooded fields, wind, and submerged grass are regular motifs. My drawings lie somewhere between abstraction and representation, capturing the essence of the land without confining it to literal forms. I like to concentrate on close-up images of the elements I see in the landscape.  I use a variety of media in my drawings and like to build up layers of mark-making. Recently, I have begun reimagining this landscape, shifting my focus so colour and organic shapes take precedence.  I am interested in exploring if the addition of colour in my drawings changes my relationship with this rain-sodden environment.
