Bio | Statement 

Visual artist Diane Henshaw creates work that bridges art, ecology, and activism. Originally from Islandmagee, Co. Antrim, and now living in Tempo, Fermanagh, Henshaw’s practice is rooted in contemporary drawing. Her work explores the energetic and spiritual connections between people and place, delving into how we experience the natural world through perception, memory, and ecological awareness.

Over three decades, Henshaw has developed a distinctive visual language that fuses abstraction with environmental reflection. Her drawings and mixed-media works frequently respond to site, sound, and landscape, embodying a contemplative engagement with nature and the politics of land.

Her recent solo exhibition Sacred Landscapes at the Leitrim Sculpture Centre examined the political representation of nature and environmental justice. Informed by contemporary ecological philosophy, the work gave voice to non-human life—encouraging audiences to reconsider their roles as stewards of the Earth.

Henshaw has exhibited widely across Ireland, the UK, Europe, India, the United States, and Japan, with recent solo presentations at Roe Valley Arts Centre, Limerick Museum, the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, and Onkaf Art Gallery in New Delhi. Her work has also been included in international drawing projects such as The Drawing Box—a global initiative she founded and curates—which connects hundreds of artists across continents through small-format works on paper.

Residencies and fellowships have included the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Sanskriti Foundation (New Delhi), Ballinglen Arts Foundation (Mayo), Leitrim Sculpture Centre, and Onkaf Art Foundation (India). Henshaw has received numerous awards from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and is represented in major collections including the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Civil Service N. Ireland, Ballinglen Art Foundation, and private collections worldwide.

Through her practice, Diane continues to advocate for a more conscious and compassionate relationship with the planet. Her work invites reflection, dialogue, and reconnection—merging art and activism in the service of ecological awareness and creative renewal.
