Bio/Statement

Bina Shah studied Illustration at Harrow School of Art. She is a multidisciplinary visual artist, and her focus is on contemporary abstract art.

Bina’s focus has shifted from illustration to abstraction in her work - paintings, ceramics, printmaking and textile art. Her practice is site-responsive and deep rooted in both urban and rural environments echoing her emotional response to a site or situation. Her childhood memories of growing up in Kenya has evoked a passion of being connected with the land. Where possible she collects and uses natural earth pigments and plant materials to makes her own botanical inks to capture the colours of the land to give a sense of place. She makes her own bamboo mark making tools and inks from Ayurvedic herb and has currently begun to add hand/machine stitch to introduce texture, line and colour to add three-dimensional elements to her work.

She has exhibited widely since 2018 and received several awards – East London Printmakers Prize in 2022

Excellence in Printmaking Prize at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in 2021

Woolwich Contemporary Prize at the annual National Original Print Exhibition 2019.

In 2023, her print was presented in a Box Set Edition by East London Printmakers as part of Victoria & Albert Museum’s Archive. Her work is in private collections around the world.
