Bio

Dr Annemarie Murland is a Scottish-born, Vienna-based artist, researcher, and educator working internationally. Her interdisciplinary practice operates across drawing, painting, and writing within the expanded field of contemporary art. Grounded in practice-led research, her work positions drawing as a process of enquiry—an active, material and temporal site through which thinking is enacted and reconfigured. Engaging themes of intergenerational migration, memory, and embodied perception, she employs drawing as a generative and destabilising force. Murland holds a PhD in Fine Art from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and has over twenty years of experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students, specialising in practice-led research and critical development.

Artist Statement 

The Walk With Me project explores drawing as an embodied and durational process, where movement, memory, and material converge. Working with layered surfaces, textiles, and pigment, these works emerge through acts of accumulation, erasure, and repetition. Drawing operates here as both trace and event—holding the tension between presence and absence, stability and dissolution. The works resist fixed representation, instead functioning as sites of encounter where material and gesture register lived experience. Through this process, drawing becomes a form of migratory thinking—responsive, contingent, and continuously unfolding.
