André Geertse was born in 1959 in Vlissingen. He grew up in an environment shaped by the sea, the open landscape, and the distinctive Zeeland light — elements that would later echo subtly through his artistic sensibility. After completing secondary school, he continued his studies in Middelburg, The Hague, and Tilburg. After studying at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg, he settled in that city, where he developed a distinctive yet continuously exploratory body of work.

The work deals with ideas of repetition, variation, colour, light and space, often articulated in series in which subtle shifts create an almost musical rhythm. A recurrent subject in the works is the abstraction of the figure of the right hand. The figure becomes a logo and represents the search for mystery of life.

Throughout his career, Geertse participated in numerous exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad, including shows in Berlin, Paris, Sydney, Athens, New Delhi, Istanbul, Groningen, Amsterdam, and many other cities. His artistic practice was closely connected to international drawing networks and mailart communities.

André Geertse passed away in August 2025 and was laid to rest in Domburg.
